Now in its thirtieth fabulous year, (after missing 2 years due to Covid-19) the Filmmaking Summer School offers intensive teaching in the essential aspects of filmmaking. Each day or session is taught by Australia's leading film industry practitioners in their area of expertise.
The course, open to aspiring filmmakers of all ages and backgrounds, is designed to cover the essential skills, basic knowledge and industry insight needed to make films, knowledge that would normally require years of experience to acquire, and will equip participants with the confidence, knowledge and skills to start a career in film or television and translate their own ideas and visions to the screen.
More exciting than a film festival, more real than film itself, you will begin to understand the enormous skill and energy that goes into that smoothly finished product on the screen.
The Filmmaking Summer School can be taken in full or participants can choose their own days and make up their own course/s.
Who are the filmmaking courses for?
The Script to Screen, Writing, Acting & Directing and Filmmaking Fundamentals courses are open for people of all ages with little or no prior filmmaking experience, practising filmmakers or actors wanting to change career direction as well as media teachers and students, production companies wishing to train staff, photographers wanting to move to the moving image, and anyone wanting to understand, and learn, all the steps to make great films.
Please note that Documentary Filmmaking and the Cinematography Intensive will not be available in 2026. If you are interested in Documentary Filmmaking the Filmmaking Fundamentals hands-on course includes the basics of filmmaking (cameras, lighting, sound, an introduction to editing, and shooting B roll footage), how to interview people, storytelling, and filming techniques that are applicable. If you are interested in screenwriting, the 2 day Writing, Acting and Directing days explore storytelling in very practical ways and participants will devise a script, act in and direct their scripts, and break down how scripts work.
